AAAS Advanced Search Field Descriptions
Field Explanation
Find results with all the words

Words entered into this field must be present in a document for that document to be returned. Words should be entered with spaces between them.

example: living environment

with the exact phrase

Enter an entire phrase into this field. The entire phrase must be present in a document for that document to be returned. If only a single word is entered in this field it will be treated as if it were entered in the "Find results with all the words" field.

example: every cell is covered by a membrane

with any of the words

One or more of the words entered in this field must be present in a document for that document to be returned. If only a single word is entered in this field it will be treated as if it were entered in the "Find results with all the words" field.

example: atlas benchmarks

without the words

Words entered in this field must not be present in a document for that document to be returned. At least one of the above fields must be used in conjunction with this field.

example: textbook
(use in conjunction with any of the above examples)

Language This function is not implemented. If an option other than "any language" is selected no results will be returned.
Domains

This field allows you to limit the location from which documents will be retrieved. Enter the domain or URL stem you would like to use. You can choose to search only within the location specified (choose "Only" from the drop-down) or to search every other location (choose "Don't" from the drop-down). The domains are limited to those indexed by the AAAS search engine (such as aaas.org and project2061.org).

example: project2061.org
example: www.project2061.org/tools/benchol

Sort You can choose to sort the results by relevance or by date. Sorting by relevance will show documents with the highest probability of meeting your criteria first. Sorting by date will show the most recently updated documents first.
Sources This lists the available document indexes. At least one source must be selected. At present only one source is available.
Return This drop-down list allows you to choose the number of results to return.
Timeout This drop-down list allows you to specify the maximum amount of time the search engine will use when performing your search. The search engine will only take as much time as needed up until this limit. If a search requires more time than is specified here the search engine will halt processing of the request and return the results it has available. Most searches can be done within the default timeout period.
Filter This function is not implemented. If an option other than "no filtering" is selected no results will be returned.
